Funding Circle Open Meeting – 2nd April 2025

In this open circle meeting, we invited current and potential collaborators to explore the future of the Funding Circle—a dedicated working group within the International Permaculture CoLab. Over the past few years, we've quietly but persistently supported permaculture-aligned projects to access funding, build strategic relationships, and develop sustainable resourcing practices.

Now, we’re at a point of transformation—where expanding our team and growing our collective impact is both necessary and exciting.

In this call, we share:
🔹 Our vision, mission, and aims
🔹 The impact we've had despite limited resources
🔹 Emerging needs and opportunities in the permaculture movement
🔹 An invitation to contribute your energy, skills, or support

We also invite reflections and ideas on how we can strengthen our circle, create more visibility, and meet the growing demand for resourcing across our networks.

Batwa Regenerative Livelihoods Permaculture Program

The Batwa community in western Uganda are found in the Bundibugyo and Kisoro districts on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. The Batwa live on gathered natural foods such as fruits, tubers, herbs and wild meat for survival. In the 1990s the Batwa were displaced from their indigenous forest areas by the government in favor of wildlife conservation.

They were placed in camps where they cannot access basic food, clean water, shelter or support their children's education. Due to climate change, the Batwa are illegally search for building materials, firewood and herbal species where they are not allowed, as they are being described as agents of habitat degradation by the government wildlife agencies and conservation authorities. Since 1997 the same places have been infested by rebel groups from the Democratic Republic of Congo making it unsafe.

The PEACE Foundation would like to implement a permaculture program that helps them to access basic and abundant foods such as vegetables, mushrooms, rabbit rearing, household goat/cow rearing. This will help them to improve their health and nutrition status and to meet other basic needs and support their children in school. Since traditional agriculture has failed to improve livelihoods in Batwa communities, permaculture will practices will help to build on their indigenous knowledge to foster more resilience, providing advisory and localized permaculture training and support.

Diversity and Decolonization

The International Permaculture CoLab recognises that permaculture history, ethics, principles and practices have deep roots in many indigenous cultures.

This section of our newsletter is dedicated to addressing gaps in knowledge, highlighting resources and important work. We seek to promote, share and support diversity and decolonization projects, organisations and shared knowledge around the world that are aligned with our vision of a socially just world where we live in harmony with nature.

Take the Harvard Implicit Bias Test

The mission of Project Implicit is to educate the public about bias and to provide a “virtual laboratory” for collecting data on the internet. Project Implicit scientists produce high-impact research that forms the basis of our scientific knowledge about bias and disparities.

You'll be asked to select an Implicit Association Test (IAT) from a list of possible topics. You'll also be asked (optionally) to report your attitudes or beliefs about these topics to give you some information about yourself. We ask these questions because the IAT can be more valuable if you also describe your own self-understanding of the attitude or stereotype that the IAT measures. We would also like to compare differences between people and groups.

Resource of the Month

Creating and Maintaining a Sociocratic Ecosystem

The CoLab is a sociocratic organization. If you don’t know exactly what means, or how it works in action, then this document is a great place to start. It contains simple pointers in an easy to read format with lots of graphs and pictures. This document was the result of a training session that was offered by Minimum Viable Academy (MVA), a micro-enterprise that is affiliated with the CoLab. From this document you can find links to the session design and to a recording of their workshop.

This document covers self organization, permaculture principles in action, and an introduction to sociocracy. It talks about what sociocracy looks like in real life and some sociocratic principles. It then goes over the principles of creation and principles of maintenance. Finally, some further resources and some questions for reflection are offered.

The creation of this document by MVA team members Aimee Fenech and Jyo Maan was made possible with funding from the International Permaculture CoLab and Next Steps Project.
Interested in adding your resources to the commons? Send us your creations to contact@perma.earth and we will review them and add them onto the Downloadable Resources Section on perma.earth.
