Water, Wisdom & Work: How Malawi’s Ecovillage and Innovation Hub Are Building a New Future Together
In Malawi, two grassroots projects—separated by just a 30-minute drive—are proving that real change flows when communities lead their own solutions.
|
At Chikwa Ecovillage, our new borehole isn't just bringing water—it's bringing sovereignty. Meanwhile, at the SURCOD Innovation Hub, young Malawians are picking up cameras instead of waiting for others to tell their stories. Together, we're writing a new playbook for development—that is rooted in land, labor, and local leadership
|
|
The Ecovillage: Where Water Changes Everything
|
This week, our team completed drilling a life-changing borehole, ensuring: Clean water access for our communities and families • Reliable irrigation for permaculture gardens • 4+ hours daily returned to women and children.
|
|
This isn't just hydration, this is time for my daughter to study, for me to grow vegetables to sell, for our community to breathe.
|
With solar-powered pumping and drip irrigation now possible, we can start expanding food forests using native species • Training farmers in water-smart techniques • Documenting progress for other villages
|
|
Water is our first freedom. Now, we’re using it to grow food, train farmers, and film our own story—no outsiders dictating the narrative.

Kandaria Village Water Well Project Proposal
Water is a critical resource for the well-being of any community. Kandaria Village, in Homabay county, Kenya, is home to approximately 120 households within a 3km radius. The village faces challenges in accessing clean and safe water. The existing seepage pond provides water year-round but lacks a filtration and distribution system, leading to waterborne diseases and inconvenience for residents. This project aims to transform the natural seepage pond into a modern, sustainable water source.
Goals:
|
- To provide Kandaria Village with a clean and sustainable water supply
- To improve community health by ensuring water is purified and safe for consumption
- To enhance environmental sustainability through the adoption of modern filtration and
solar-powered water pumping technology
- Install a bio-sand filter system
- Construct a fenced perimeter around the seepage pond
- Develop a gravity-fed piping system for ease of water access
- Implement community participation and contribution to promote project sustainability

The International Permaculture CoLab recognises that permaculture history, ethics, principles and practices have deep roots in many indigenous cultures.
This section of our newsletter is dedicated to addressing gaps in knowledge, highlighting resources and important work. We seek to promote, share and support diversity and decolonization projects, organisations and shared knowledge around the world that are aligned with our vision of a socially just world where we live in harmony with nature.

When They See Us: Netflix Miniseries
In 1989, a jogger was assaulted and raped in New York's Central Park, and five young black people were subsequently charged with the crime. The quintet, labeled the Central Park Five, maintained its innocence and spent years fighting the convictions, hoping to be exonerated. This limited series spans a quarter of a century, from when the teens are first questioned about the incident in the spring of 1989, going through their exoneration in 2002 and ultimately the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014. Based on a true story.

Convergence Research Report
This document is an in-depth report. The Convergence Research Project focuses on reporting the current state of the organization of permaculture convergences worldwide, through ten case studies. The aim of the collaborative research project is to reach out to organizers from the worldwide permaculture community to learn about common organizational and digital challenges and ethical solutions in the field.
|
The document begins by giving a historic context of the International Permaculture CoLab and talking about research topics and aims. It then discusses methods and methodology. Finally it goes into data analysis, discussing team organisation, movement building, funding and resources, and then digital tools and literacy.
