Call for Permaculture Researchers: Let’s Elevate Permaculture Research Together
Are you a researcher who has published academic papers on permaculture?
We’d love to hear from you.
The International Permaculture CoLab is starting a community-driven effort to elevate permaculture research and spark more public discourse around permaculture as a tool for addressing today’s global challenges—climate change, food security, biodiversity loss, and social justice.
To spotlight existing research, build dialogue between researchers and practitioners, and make permaculture research more visible and accessible.
Researchers with peer-reviewed publications on permaculture or related themes.
Practitioners who have contributed to action research, case studies, or community-led research with academic outputs.
Scholars interested in bridging the gap between research and practice.
If this speaks to you—or if there’s a particular part of this call-out that feels relevant—please send us a short email introducing yourself and your research.
Please include: - A brief overview of your research focus - Links to any publications (if available) - Which part of this initiative you’re most interested in (e.g., visibility, practitioner-researcher dialogue, knowledge exchange, etc.)
We’re excited to connect with researchers who want to help strengthen the role of permaculture in research and global problem-solving.

Joanna Macy
Dear friends, With full hearts, we share that Joanna Macy, our beloved root teacher, mentor, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on July 19th, at 3:56PM Pacific Time.
Over these past weeks, Joanna continued to inspire us through her presence, clarity, and deep love for life. She chose to remain at home, where she was held in love, as she gently let go.
Joanna gave us a profound understanding of the gifts of grief and a vision for resilience. She offered the Spiral and the larger body of the Work That Reconnects not just as a framework, but as a way to move through the world with courage and tenderness. She reminded us, again and again, that the world is alive and we belong to it.
Though her body has left us, her work pulses in every one of us. In every moment of truth-speaking, in every gathering that dares to feel, in every act of sacred activism - we will keep her message alive.
May we carry forward her love of life. May we grieve with open eyes. May we continue the Great Turning she so faithfully named.
The Network is organizing an online gathering to celebrate her life, with the date to be announced soon.

With reverence, The Work That Reconnects Network Weavers

Diversity and Decolonization
The International Permaculture CoLab recognises that permaculture history, ethics, principles and practices have deep roots in many indigenous cultures.
This section of our newsletter is dedicated to addressing gaps in knowledge, highlighting resources and important work. We seek to promote, share and support diversity and decolonization projects, organisations and shared knowledge around the world that are aligned with our vision of a socially just world where we live in harmony with nature.

Black Fatigue. How Racism Erodes the Mind, Body, and Spirit by Mary-Frances Winters.
Black Fatigue is a vital resource for Black and non-Black people who are looking for ways to heal, learn, and have productive and supportive conversations about racial injustice and trauma. To move forward, we need to know where we came from and where we are — Black Fatigue is the foundation from which we can begin to imagine a better world, together.
This book highlights the history of white supremacist, racist systems that led to Black intergenerational fatigue. It focuses on the impact of Black fatigue on Blacks and on society. The racist system is not just literally killing Black people; it is tearing the nation apart. In every aspect of life, from socioeconomics to education, the workforce, criminal justice and, very importantly, health outcomes. It is paradoxical that with all the attention over the last 50 years on social justice and diversity and inclusion, we have made little progress in actualizing the vision of an equitable society.
This is a resource that was shared by The Winters Group, Inc..

EcoSocial Design: Using Leadership and Enterprise in Service to Regenerative Living
An eBook by CoLab member Andrew Langford. Ecosocial Design is a call to upgrade our actions for people, planet and all life forms. It extends the substantial earth-care notions of permaculture into the cultural realm. Presented by Gaia Education, details from this full-length book are a part of their curriculum for their Gaia U Certificate in Ecosocial Design.
“It is a wide ranging curriculum that assumes, as a kind of prerequisite, a practitioner level knowledge of permaculture design. Practicing permaculture is our favored method for reconnecting ourselves with nature especially as it holds to so-called deep green ethics – Care of the Earth, Care of People and Limits to Consumption and Population. These essential ethics go past an anthropocentric viewpoint in favor of a web-of-life perspective: humans are part of this web of life, not separate from it, and so, if immediate human interests clash with ecosystem interests, we strive to give the latter priority. *If you don’t have a grounded knowledge of permaculture design find a permaculture design course and get it now and start practicing it.”
