Translation of Rosemary Morrow's "Permaculture Teacher Training" into Spanish

The expected output of this project is a finished Spanish translation and revision of Rosemary Morrow’s Permaculture Teacher Training (PTT) manual.

A Spanish language version of the manual is what is needed in order to create in-person, online, and hybrid versions of the training in Spanish. Rosemary created the PTT in order to have a multiplier effect in spreading permaculture more widely through the world, which it certainly has done. But it has been limited by only being available in English

Objectives 2025

Specific: Translate and adapt Rosemary Morrow’s “Permaculture Teacher Training” (PTT) book into Spanish to make permaculture education more accessible to Spanish-speaking communities.

Measurable: Complete the translation of all chapters (approximately 200 pages]) within seven months in order to have it ready for the first PTT in Spanish, scheduled to take place in Cataluña, Spain from October 18 – 25, 2025.

Achievable: Assemble a qualified team with experience in permaculture and translation to ensure accurate and culturally relevant content.

Relevant: Address the growing demand for permaculture resources among Spanish-speaking educators and practitioners.

Time-bound: Finalize the translation and initial proofreading within six months, followed by dissemination through appropriate channels.

This project aims to make one of the most important permaculture education resources accessible to the large Spanish-speaking community around the world.

The team has been coordinating a collaborative review process to ensure an accurate and inclusive translation that reflects permaculture values and teaching approaches. Despite some early communication challenges, the project is now progressing well, with a committed team of volunteer reviewers ready to complete the work in the coming weeks.

The final outcome will be a high-quality Spanish version of Permaculture Teacher Training, shared under a Creative Commons license through the CoLab. This will allow educators and networks across Latin America, Spain, and beyond to use and adapt the material for teacher trainings and community education.

Indigenous-Led Permaculture: Collaboration & Knowledge-Sharing

This project aims to document the land stewardship and knowledge-sharing practices of Indigenous communities involved in permaculture. It focuses on preserving cultural traditions, promoting sustainability, and fostering intergenerational learning; while also increasing collaboration, making indigenous-led permaculture groups aware of the work of the CoLab and creating opportunities for further network weaving.

Objectives 2025

The aim of this project is to conduct 4-6 case studies through 7-10 interviews with Indigenous elders, youth, and farmers. The findings will be documented in a digital report that includes written case studies. The project will also explore partnerships with other organizations to bridge traditional and modern knowledge and the results will be shared through a presentation of the final report.

Timeline and Approach
Months 1-2: Identify participants and schedule interviews.
Months 3-4: Conduct interviews and gather insights.
Month 5: Compile findings into a report.
Month 6: Share results via report.

Focus Areas of Indigenous-Led Permaculture:
Community Collaboration: Shared decision-making and land stewardship with partnerships to blend traditional and modern knowledge.
Intergenerational Learning: Elders pass on wisdom, while youth engage in hands-on learning.
Storytelling & Oral Traditions: Knowledge is preserved through oral histories and observation.
Long-Term Resilience: Emphasis on sustainability, food sovereignty, and climate resilience for future generations.

Bonus objective: If this team is fully funded and has capacity, we will also curate and share optional video/audio resources for multimedia learning.

Expected Outputs

Creating a document that will bring change to permaculture spaces by promoting intergenerational knowledge, enabling us to share and collaborate using the insights we receive from various interviews
We envision passionate learners around the world engaging with this living document—rich with knowledge that inspires transformation in those who seek to learn, unlearn, and grow.

Intended Outcomes

To produce a document that not only educates, but also honors and preserves the wishes and wisdom of older generations—ensuring that future generations understand how things were done before they arrived
To create a document whose value lies not in comparison, but in its ability to hold space for sharing, learning, and unlearning—a place where diverse humans come together, embracing differences and growing through collective wisdom
This will be a reflection of how people from diverse tribes and cultures create, connect, and learn—with the land as both teacher and student. It’s is a globally integrative document of permaculture knowledge, bridging wisdom from elders to younger generations; and honouring the work of indigenous elders have contributed to the field.

This project has been an incredible journey – born from the land, guided by wisdom, and rooted in community. As we grow and connect with more people across the globe, we continue to be amazed by the depth of knowledge shared through this Indigenous-led permaculture movement.

Through this experience, we have realized how many permaculturists around the world need support, and how their stories hold the power to inspire and transform others. This project has truly been amazing. Personally, I am deeply connected to anything that ties me to the land and promotes equality.

Along the way, I have learned and unlearned many things about life, community, and leadership. I have come to understand that the wisdom held by Indigenous peoples , passed down through dreams, through stories, and through word of mouth , continues to shape the future. As a healer, I believe this is the Indigenous way: to bring balance, healing, and vision into how we live and grow together.

This project has also taught me valuable lessons about leadership, collaboration, and communication. Above all, it has reminded me that as people, we are one, united by the land and by the shared responsibility to care for it.

We want to host 4 events during the emergent festival (measurable & achievable & time-bound), designed to welcome the CoLab members across different time zones to explore together how they see or want to see the CoLab become post-2025 (specific). The outcomes will be added to the already available imaginariums conducted by Next Steps Contributors incrementally built to inform the Funding Strategy and the Communication Strategy work undertaken through the Next Steps Project this year (relevant).

Expected Outputs

Create a space where individual ideas can become collective, create impetus for a shared vision and what that might look like. Support the fundraising officer and the communication team in refining the future vision and structure of the Colab based on the collective shared ideas.

The project created a space for CoLab members to explore how they wish the CoLab to evolve beyond 2025. Through four Open Space sessions, we gathered around themes such as CoLab as an incubator, membership models, the role of AI, and non-hierarchical consultancy.

The Open Space format invited curiosity and self-organisation. The reflections and insights that emerged are already feeding into the imaginarium and continue to inform the Funding and Communication strategies.

In a world full of uncertainty, we embraced the same flow. Sometimes the beginning of a journey is a question.

Comunicar La Permacultura En Español

Creemos que al intentar promover la permacultura en el mundo hispanohablante aún quedan varios obstáculos por superar. Uno de las principales dificultades parece ser una serie de prejuicios sobre la permacultura, que a menudo confunden el término con una técnica de cultivo o jardinería ecológica. También hemos experimentado y recibido personalmente la opinión de que el concepto o bien está relacionado con algo que sólo hacen las personas que tienen mucho dinero (pensemos en grandes movimientos de tierra, por ejemplo) o bien con personas que utilizan la idea de los procesos naturales como excusa para ser unas holgazanas (y lo quieren todo gratis).

En este contexto, creemos que existe una clara necesidad y oportunidad en el mundo de habla hispana de comunicar las ideas básicas de la permacultura de forma más explícita y detallada, incluyendo todos los principios éticos y los de otro tipo, así como todos los pétalos de flores de la permacultura o las 3 B de RetroSuburbia (“Built” – el contexto construido, “Biological” – lo biológico, y “Behavioural” – los hábitos) y mostrar su valor al hacerlo. Al mismo tiempo, creemos que esto podría crear un terreno para dar impulso a una variedad de proyectos de permacultura en toda la comunidad permacultora de habla hispana, en todos sus contextos sociales, económicos y culturales.

La idea es crear un lugar de encuentro para practicantes y/o interesados en la permacultura de habla hispana, donde se pueda co-crear material optimizado para diferentes redes sociales. Estos recursos serían una caja de herramientas para cualquiera que quiera promover la permacultura en español. Este lugar de encuentro facilitado y este proceso participativo darían cabida a distintas voces y perspectivas de la permacultura, intentando reflejar su diversidad pero ofreciendo también criterios de mantenimiento de la calidad y algunas pautas unificadoras. Idealmente, el material básico resultante de este proceso estaría disponible gratuitamente en línea a través de la página web del CoLab, abierto a ser ampliado en una fase futura.

Objetivos 2023

1 – Crear una imagen esquematizada del estado actual del pensamiento permacultor en el mundo hispanohablante, identificando los países y zonas que proclaman tener un movimiento permacultor, visualizando quién habla de permacultura en qué zonas, qué dicen y en qué dirección se desarrollan (proyectos familiares, ecoaldeas, diseñadores profesionales, practicantes de agricultura regenerativa…) → hoja de cálculo.

2 – Crear y reforzar conexiones entre diferentes practicantes de permacultura del mundo hispanohablante, con especial atención a aquellos que se acercan profesionalmente a la permacultura o desean hacerlo, utilizando un proceso participativo para el diseño de OG (Objetivo General) 3.

3 – Crear textos e imágenes optimizados para diferentes plataformas de medios sociales (facebook, instagram, whatsapp…) que ayuden a las personas practicantes de permacultura (y específicamente a consultores, diseñadores y educadores profesionales) del mundo hispanohablante a comunicar conceptos e ideas fundamentales de la permacultura. Estos recursos también ayudarán a hacer visible a un público más amplio el valor del enfoque del diseño permacultural en nuestro actual contexto climático y socioeconómico global.

4 – Poner el material creado a libre y fácil disposición en perma.earth y a través de agentes colaboradores.

5 – Impulsar la difusión del material creado en los canales de medios sociales de los participantes en el proceso mediante una campaña de hashtags.

Objetivos 2024

1. En la fase 2 de este proyecto Comm-PC-Span (del Festival Emergente 2024) prevemos el Diseño de un Grupo de Trabajo para co-crear un conjunto de Infografías de Permacultura en español y su Proceso, o dicho de otra forma, queremos Diseñar el Diseño Participativo que tendrá lugar en la fase 3, un Festival Comm-PC-Span (com-psi-span) dentro del Festival Emergente de 2025.

2. Participar en este proceso de diseño colaborativo de permacultura y documentarlo, afinando nuestras propias habilidades de diseñadores, así como compartiendo con el mundo un ejemplo de un posible diseño para el portafolio de la diplomatura de diseño aplicado de permacultura.

3. Como consecuencia / línea de impacto de las actividades: Reforzar el Movimiento de Permacultura de habla hispana y dar a conocer más ampliamente el CoLab de Permacultura.

Resultados 2024

¿Qué se ha logrado en Y2?
Creemos haber cubierto los objetivos para Y2, ya que:
1. Hemos formado, diseñado y desarrollado el Grupo de Trabajo (nosotros: Aline, Auba y Jorge), creado la plantilla para las infografías y diseñado el Proceso Parcipatorio para Y3 (entre nosotros y las personas con las que estamos contactando).
2. Hemos comenzado a tomar las acciones necesarias para implementar este diseño, mejorando nuestras habilidades de diseño en el proceso.
3. en este proceso ya estamos conectando con la comunidad de permacultura de habla hispana y al mismo tiempo impulsando trabajos y proyectos dentro de CoLab.

¿Qué se ha hecho concretamente?
– Acordar una estrategia de comunicación: cómo desarrollar una plantilla infográfica sencilla, donde cada proyecto colaborador pueda presentarse, conectando sus actividades con (al menos) los pétalos de la “Flor de permacultura” de David Holmgren, para poder presentar (de habla hispana) proyectos de permacultura y al mismo tiempo la Permacultura misma como método de diseño sistémico y holístico (Aline + Auba + Jorge).
– Desarrollar un diseño participativo sobre miro (usando diseño web) y recolectar ideas y acciones del mismo (Aline + Auba + Jorge).
– Actualización de sitio web en español (Aline).
– Actualizar base de datos de contactos en Nextcloud, marcar quién ha respondido en Y1 y agregar nuevos contactos (Jorge).
– Crear una plantilla gráfica para la infografía y mejorarla (Auba).
– Actualización de los textos de los emails, envío de emails a personas que han respondido anteriormente (en Y1) y a nuevos contactos. (Auba + Aline).
– Clasificar los correos electrónicos respondidos y reunir al grupo de personas/proyectos interesados en colaborar en Y3, la siguiente fase de este proyecto: un “Festival Comm-PC-Span” dentro del Festival Emergent, donde las personas pueden presentar sus propios proyectos de PC en español. , a través de las infografías y utilizando el framework que hemos desarrollado (Alina + Auba).
– Compartir información sobre este proyecto en redes sociales relacionadas con la permacultura de habla hispana (Auba).
– Elaboración de Informes y asistencia a eventos del Festival Emergente (Jorge)

Objetivos 2025

1. Siguiendo lo realizado en la fase 2 de este proyecto (Festival Emergente 2024), este año buscamos finalizar la recopilación de retroalimentaciones e interactuar con los proyectos de permacultura y personas que contactamos previamente para incorporarlos a la fase 3 de “Comm-PC-Span” (Festival Emergente 2025).

2. Estas personas presentarán sus proyectos y co-crearán con nosotras un conjunto de infografías de permacultura en español. Esto se convertirá en una especie de Festival “Comm-PC-Span” dentro del Festival Emergente.

3. Seguiremos promocionando este proyecto (y la permacultura en español) en redes sociales.

4. Participaremos en este proceso colaborativo de diseño de permacultura y lo documentaremos, perfeccionando nuestras habilidades de diseño y compartiendo con el mundo un ejemplo de un posible diseño de portafolio para un diploma.

5. Como consecuencia directa de este proyecto y de la integración de nuevas personas en el equipo, estamos fortaleciendo el movimiento de permacultura hispanohablante y aumentando la visibilidad del CoLab de Permacultura

Resultados 2025

Estamos muy satisfechxs con el resultado final de nuestro trabajo en equipo y esperamos que vosotrxs también lo disfruten. Hemos publicado una serie de infografías que muestran varios proyectos de permacultura de la comunidad hispanohablante internacional, destacando el aspecto holístico de la permacultura. Nuestro objetivo es compartir este trabajo en redes sociales y dejar que su carácter de onda expansiva emerja.

Este equipo ha cambiado a lo largo de estos tres años, pero hemos logrado mantener el enfoque en nuestros objetivos e integrar las nuevas ideas y habilidades creativas de nuestros nuevos miembros. El flujo de trabajo ha sido agradable, hemos tenido una buena gestión del tiempo y una comunicación eficaz, a pesar de haber trabajado mayoritariamente de forma asíncrona, lo que a veces ha resultado complicado. Pensamos que podríamos haber tenido algunas reuniones o tiempo de coworking para ser más eficientes en el diseño y la maquetación de las infografías.
Nos sentimos enriquecidxs por esta experiencia de diseño colaborativo y esperamos profundamente que el impacto que este proyecto pueda tener en las personas involucradas y en todas las que lo vean pueda ser útil e inspirador.

African Landless Permaculturist Project: Ikhwelo Healers Collective

Tackling ‘landless permaculturists’ in Southern Africa to decolonise and democratise permaculture through research into creative low-capital options.

Objectives

Conduct field and desk research on alternative land-access options in South Africa for landless permaculturists with limited capital and credit. In months 1-4, we’ll investigate opportunities, processes, costs, and relevant laws, learning from successful low-capital permaculturists and land gatekeepers.

Compare these options with SADC countries for regional fit (Month 4).

Publish a guide on creative land access for permaculture, disseminate to grassroots groups in permaculture, traditional healing, agroecology, and food sovereignty, initially in English and one indigenous language, potential future translations/videos.(Month 4-5)

Develop a framework from our research to address land access and use in Southern Africa, offering insights for the rest of Africa, the Global South, and landless permaculturists globally. This framework and our findings will be shared with the CoLab to inspire and enable similar regional initiatives. (Month 6)

Our team has successfully completed what we envision as the first phase of our research into creative land access strategies for low-capital African Permaculturists. We have published two artifacts:

Sowing Seeds Without Soil – Navigating Land Access for African Permaculturists v1.0

A 62 page guide detailing the research process, findings, and advice for African permaculturists wanting to access land without high capital costs. This guide contains stories of permaculture projects and indigenous farmers operating on tribal land, in land trusts, on land from redistribution programmes; as well as challenges especially around gender when accessing land. Focused on SADC for now but with plans to expand into other regions in Africa.

Grassroots Land Access Research Draft Framework – A 1 page infographic outlining our research approach for others to replicate in other regions or with other focus areas. This would be likely applicable in other African regions and might find relevance in other Global South contexts, and with adaption it may be useful to researchers in the Global North interested in alternative land-access and grassroots initiatives.
